McCamy History

The first McCamy, in this branch of the McCamy family, arriving in America (that we are aware of) was Francis Makemie who arrived in 1683.

In 1683 Francis Makemie arrives from Ireland, his work in founding churches in the US earnedhim the title, "Father of American Presbyterianism,".

In 1706, Makemie, with six other ministers, organizes the first presbytery in the American colonies in Philadelphia. More on Francis Makemie

Francis and his wife had two children, both girls. Francis had two brothers we are aware of; John and Robert II. The McCamy's on this web site are desendants of his brother, John.

Francis's sibling and our direct ancestor, John Makemie (ca 1665 - 1735) was born at Ramelton, county Donegal, (North) Ireland, The son of Robert Makemie, a highland Scot who imigrated to Ireland from the land of Clan Fraser near Inverness.

The McCamy family notable ancestors includes Rene de St Julien. For more on the St Julien family Click Here .
