John C. and Frances Elizabeth Acker Griffin
Parents of Susan
Griffin McCamy
Frances Elizabeth
Acker Griffin was the first child of Holbert and
Elizabeth Garrison Acker of Queensland, South
Carolina. Her parents were first cousins.
Frances had a
prestigious background. Her ancestors included:
the Acker family, the Holbert family (which can
document lineage back to Princess
Pocahontas) and the Garrison family. Each
of these families were involved in colonial life
and some fought in the American Revolution.
John C. Griffin (b
1815) and Frances Elizabeth Acker (b 1826)
married January 16, 1846.
John C. Griffin was
probably son of John Griffith and grandson of
William Griffin and his first wife Sarah Kinsey
Griffin. (William Griffin fought in the American
Revolutionary War and died in 1800). Family
history has not been documented and there are
several John C. Griffins so it is impossible to
know if information is correct. Tom Wetmore
thought Sue Griffin McCamy’s father was John
Calhoun Griffin.
John Calhoun
Griffin. had previously married (Jan 19, 1842)
Martha Ann Prince. She died June 19th, 1843 and
left a baby girl also named Martha Ann Prince
Griffin called “Mattie”. Mattie was about three
when John and Frances married. John was a
merchant and furniture maker. They lived in
Williamston, SC (near Anderson) until after the
civil war.
In addition to
John’s daughter Mattie, John and Frances had
eight children.
After the Civil War
ended in 1865 the Graiffin family moved to
Murray county , Georgia. The explanation which
Susan Griffin McCamy, their daughter gave was;
The Yankees made it so hard for the people
of South Carolina that they refugeed
(migrated) to Georgia.” The economy was
especially bad in South Carolina after the war
was because everything had been destroyed.
I have no details
about the Griffin family in Murray county except
their daughter, Sue (Susan?) married Frank
Welborn McCamy in 1874 when she was 17 years
old.
John and Frances
Griffin left Murray county, Georgia and moved to
Cherokee county, North Carolina and are listed
as living in the house with their daughter
Mollie (Mary Isabelle) and her husband George
Whitcomb, MD (1880 census in Beaver Dam TWP,
Cherokee county, NC T-9-958-3110A).
John Griffin was a
member of the Ancient Free and accepted Mason
for over 40 years. He died in 1893 after a long
illness.
Frances Griffin was
found dead early one morning in 1899 on the bank
of the Hiawasse River, we have no record of what
happened.
Both John C. and
Francis Griffin were buried in Oguesta, North
Carolina. The Hiawassee Dam was built and
Oguesta is now covered by lake water.
